Updated June 23, 2012

Welcome to the Jonathan Browning Organization.

Jonathan Browning was born October 22, 1805 on the family farm located on the Brushy Fork of Bledsoe Creek in Sumner County, Tennessee.

He repaired his first gun at age 14. At age 19 he became a gunsmith apprentice in Nashville, TN. He married Elizabeth Stalcup in 1823, 12 years later in 1835 he moved his family to Illinois. During the year of 1846 he left Illinois with Mormon pioneers. He stayed in Council Bluff, Iowa area until 1852; he migrated to Utah that year. Two years after arriving in Utah, he married Elizabeth Caroline Clark. Then in 1858 he married Ann Emmett. He passed away in Ogden, Utah at the age of 73 in 1879.

Jonathan is the father of John M Browning - the great gun inventor - and thus the Browning name is well known throughout Utah, America, and the world.

Jonathan had twenty-two children and two step-children. We have identified several thousand decendants.

We encourage everyone to contribute their Browning family history (pictures, histories, genealogy) to the site to be used for further research of the family. Join the conversation and fun on facebook

One of the goals we have accomplished as an organization was a 200th Birthday Celebration for Jonathan Browning held Oct 21-23, 2005 at Union Station in Ogden, UT.  We viewed the Celebration as a great success and many family members were able to meet each other.
